Bristol’s iconic city landmark, the cliff-top Suspension Bridge spans the spectacular Avon Gorge linking the boutique shops, garden squares and Bath-stone terraces of Clifton Village (Bristol’s answer to Hampstead) and leafy Leigh Woods.

Completed in 1864 as a posthumous tribute to its designer Isambard Brunel, the Grade I listed toll bridge carries a section of the B3129 with a Visitor Centre on one side and the hilltop Clifton Observatory on the other. Don’t look down.

The Berkeley family, who have lived here since the place was built in the 12th century, invite you on a tour of this magnificent medieval castle and gardens – the tower rooms, the kitchens, the great hall and armoury, chapels, portraits, Tudor embroidery and the spooky dungeon where Edward II was murdered.

Step aboard the world’s first great ocean liner, beautifully restored and set on a ‘glass sea’ in the historic dockyard where she was built in 1843.

Tour the ship’s cabins and first-class dining salon, Go Aloft to climb the rigging (you’ll need advance reservation and a head for heights) and go below to see the ship’s iron hull. A companion museum, Being Brunel, explores the life and work of the Victorian engineer who built her.

One of a collection of free museums, Bristol Museum and Art Gallery has three floors of art, nature and history in an ornate Grade II* listed building next door to the University’s Wills Memorial Tower.
Highlights include Egyptian mummies, a Bristol Boxkite, Alfred the (stuffed) gorilla, dinosaur bones, a Gypsy Caravan, a collection of Old Masters and an under-fives’ discovery area.

On the harbour’s Millennium Square, this playful, interactive science centre is designed to educate and entertain children – and adults – of all ages. Tinker, test, draw, experiment, ask questions, make bubbles, visit the Space Gallery or stargaze in the UK’s first 3D Planetarium.
A new addition is the centre’s Project What If: ‘from the science of happiness to the nature of time …some of life’s big mysteries explored in new and exciting ways’.

Boats, bridges, seadog pubs on cobbled streets and 600 years of seafaring history, the Floating Harbour is the city’s beating heart.
Hop on a Bristol Ferry boat, visit the Watershed (cinema and digital centre), the Arnolfini (for contemporary arts), the Aquarium or Wapping Wharf’s M-Shed Museum – devoted to Bristol’s social history from the dark days of the slave trade to 21st century street art.

The story of Bristol’s world-class aviation industry unfolds in this fun, family-friendly museum where an original supersonic Concorde – Alpha Foxtrot was the last to fly – takes pride of place among a collection of aircraft spanning 100 years.

The famously elusive artist was born in the city. And thanks to his association – and a legacy of Banksy originals – his native Bristol is the UK’s capital of street art. Bristol Zoological Society’s wildlife conservation park is set in 50 acres of fresh air, with animal habitats, play areas, trails and the award-winning Bear Wood, an ancient woodland populated with roaming wolves, wolverines and big
brown bears.
